What does Seth Godin, Google Ventures, the recession & unemployment mean for startup weekend?

A random thoughts post:

Seth Godin:
Today I received my daily email from Seth Godin’s blog about the “First, ten“, where instead of trying to reach the the anonymous masses you market to the first ten people who trust, respect, need and listen to you. Then you let those ten, if they love your product or service will find ten more people to do the marketing for you. Do you get the picture?

Google Ventures - Welcome

Google Ventures:
A few days ago Google launched Google Ventures:
From the site:
Google Ventures seeks to discover and grow great companies - we believe in the power of entrepreneurs to do amazing things. We’re studying a broad range of industries, including consumer Internet, software, hardware, clean-tech, bio-tech and health care. We invest anywhere from seed to mezzanine stage and embrace the challenge of helping young companies grow from the garage to global relevance.

The rescission:
Government and Wall Street says we’re in a rescission
Recession definition: the state of the economy declines; a widespread decline in the GDP and employment and trade lasting from six months to a year

Unemployment:
A lot of people are unemployed and/or fearing unemployment. Unemployed or working keeping a positive attitude can take you a long way.

So what does Seth Godin, Google Ventures, the recession & unemployment mean for startup weekend? It means Opportunity!

Attending startup weekend is an opportunity to put your skills to work, network with other passionate individuals, learn for others with similar interest and a time to think about what you could launch in three days that could be the next big thing.

The Final Four at Startup Weekend? Yes!

finalfour

During the past few weeks while making the announcement about Startup Weekend I’ve heard one constant complaint: “It’s Final Four weekend and I want to see my team, play” from possible attendees. Well the weekend has arrived and Carolina fans can rejoice, UNC has made it back to the Final Four, but what does that mean for hard working programmers, designers, business planners and marketers while attending Triangle Startup Weekend? Will we have to miss the big game?

It means that you don’t have to worry because we’ll have both games on the either the projector wall or the wide screen TV at Edge Office. Even if you’re a Michigan State or Connecticut fan and want to watch the early game at 6:00 p.m. We have you covered at Triangle Startup Weekend. See you soon.

Startup weekend veteran Jeff aka @dgtlpapercuts of http://digitalpapercuts.com posted a great blog post called 6 Reasons to Attend Triangle Startup Weekend. Jeff’s post gives you a feel for startup weekend and answers some of your questions about who should attend and the expectations of attendees.  No matter if you’re unemployed, employed, created a past startup or looking to launch your own company soon, attending startup weekend will be an experience you’ll never forget and great for learning.  Here are Jeff’s six reasons but be sure to read his post (url) for the descriptions.

  1. Choose your function
  2. Choose your project
  3. Lead an area
  4. Work hard and have fun
  5. Network
  6. Start a company

From Jeff’s post: ‘If you come to Triangle Startup Weekend thinking you will be on the road to your personal recovery as part of a successful startup and the stock options are just around the corner, you may be disappointed. But if you come to experience the thrill of working with great people to build a company in weekend, you will have a great time.”

See you on Friday
